World Health Assembly opens annual meeting in Geneva

13 May 2002 The health of people across the globe is http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1448 increasingly being imperiled by behaviours such as smoking, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1669 poor hygiene and the consumption of fatty foods, the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?657 Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1226 said today.
The world is living dangerously either http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1521 because it has little choice, or because it is making wrong http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1272 choices about consumption or activity, Dr. Gro Harlem http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1240 Brundtland told delegates assembled in Geneva for the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?292 weeklong meeting of WHOs governing body, the World Health http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?943 Assembly.
In the poorest countries and communities, she http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1384 said, diseases were often caused by poor nutrition, unsafe http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1128 sex, unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene, iron http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?554 deficiency and indoor smoke from solid fuels. At the other http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?338 end of the risk spectrum, people in rich countries faced http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1600 high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are closely http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1380 related to excessive consumption of fatty, sugary and salty http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?369 foods. Obesity is a serious health risk, while the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?905 consequences of tobacco use and excessive alcohol http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1525 consumption are deadly, she warned.
While those factors http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1305 dominated wealthier countries, their prevalence in http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?435 developing communities was increasing, leaving poorer http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?452 countries to cope with the double burden of infectious and http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?398 non-communicable diseases, Dr. Brundtland said.
At the http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1176 same time, the WHO chief hailed progress in moving health http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?706 to the forefront of the world agenda, and welcomed the real http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?432 increase in funding earmarked for public health worldwide. http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?404 She cited successes in the areas of fighting polio, AIDS, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1537 tuberculosis and malaria as well as increases in http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1574 vaccination campaigns, progress on a tobacco control http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1314 treaty, and greater emphasis on mental illness as a major http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?371 cause of suffering and disability.
Dr. Brundtland http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?514 cautioned that these encouraging developments were just a http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?624 start. We need continued reduction in prices of medicines http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1091 and other commodities, and expansion of quality services to http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1084 the millions in need, she said. We must scale up our effort http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?512 even if the struggle seems beset with political and http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?844 institutional minefields.
The World Health Assembly, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1012 which is made up of delegates from WHOs 191 Member States, http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1055 sets the agencys policy and direction. Its current http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?1001 fifty-fifth annual meeting will debate and make policy http://www.nefga.org/forum/entry.php?702 decisions on investing in health for economic development, the final strategy for the eradication of polio and WHOs contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
